AHERA

Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act. A federal law enacted in 1986 to protect students and school staff from exposure to asbestos-containing materials in schools. It applies to public and non-public elementary and secondary schools, including charter schools and those associated with religious institutions. AHERA establishes a framework for inspecting, managing, and responding to asbestos hazards in school buildings.
