- Types of Asbestos | US ENVIRONMETNAL TESTING WORLD CUP
Asbestos is classified into six types, divided into two main groups: serpentine (chrysotile) and amphibole (crocidolite, amosite, tremolite, anthophyllite, actinolite). Classification and Characteristics Serpentine Asbestos Chrysotile (white asbestos): The only member of the serpentine group, chrysotile fibers are curly, flexible, and can be woven into fabrics. It was the most widely used type, accounting for 90–95% of asbestos in buildings and products. Common applications included roofing sheets, ceiling panels, wall plaster, brake linings, pipe insulation, and gaskets. Chrysotile is considered less hazardous than amphibole types but is still a proven carcinogen, capable of causing mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis The Mesothelioma Center The Mesothelioma Center +2 . Amphibole Asbestos Crocidolite (blue asbestos): Fibers are fine, straight, and needle-like, making them highly hazardous. Historically used in insulation, early gas masks, and even cigarette filters, crocidolite is strongly associated with mesothelioma The Mesothelioma Center The Mesothelioma Center +2 . Amosite (brown asbestos): Fibers are straight and brittle, commonly used in thermal insulation, ceiling tiles, and fireproofing materials. It is also linked to serious respiratory diseases The Mesothelioma Center The Mesothelioma Center +2 . Tremolite, Anthophyllite, Actinolite: Less commonly used industrially, these amphibole types can still be found in insulation, construction materials, and some consumer products. They have fibrous, elongated crystals and are capable of causing cancer and autoimmune conditions The Mesothelioma Center The Mesothelioma Center +1 . Health Risks All types of asbestos are hazardous. Inhaled fibers can become lodged in the lungs, causing irritation and potentially leading to mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. Amphibole fibers are generally more dangerous due to their shape and durability, but even minimal exposure to chrysotile is considered unsafe The Mesothelioma Center The Mesothelioma Center +2 . Summary Serpentine group: Chrysotile (white asbestos) – flexible, curly fibers, widely used. Amphibole group: Crocidolite (blue), Amosite (brown), Tremolite, Anthophyllite, Actinolite – straight, needle-like fibers, more hazardous. Understanding these types is crucial for occupational safety, building management, and asbestos abatement, as professional assessment is required to identify and safely handle asbestos-containing materials amg.org.uk amg.org.uk +1 . https://www.bing.com/search?q=types%20of%20asbestos&qs=n&form=QBRE&sp=-1&ghc=1&lq=0&pq=types%20of%20asbestos&sc=12-17&sk=&cvid=572905FF7CD3431BAE492DF06DF3024E

Illinois has some of the highest radon potential areas in the country, with Northern Illinois frequently reporting elevated indoor radon levels. Because radon cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, testing is the only reliable way to determine whether a property has elevated concentrations. Illinois health guidance recommends taking corrective action when radon levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L. Licensed professional radon measurements provide accurate results and help homeowners determine whether mitigation is necessary. Testing is particularly important during real estate transactions, basement finishing projects, and routine home safety evaluations. What is Radon? Radon is a radioactive noble gas formed from the decay of uranium in soil. It infiltrates structures through: Foundation cracks, Sump pits, Utility penetrations, Crawlspaces and slab joints Once inside, radon accumulates—especially in basements and lower levels. Health Risks: Why is Radon a Serious Threat? #1 cause of lung cancer among non-smokers Linked to thousands of U.S. deaths annually Long-term exposure significantly increases risk There are no immediate symptoms, making testing critical prepare for your radon test How to prepare for a closed building radon measurement: Preparing for a Closed-Building Radon Measurement Steps to Follow Before and During Testing by US Environmental Testing To ensure accurate radon measurement results, follow the steps below before and during the testing period. If you have any questions or concerns, contact US Environmental Testing for assistance. 1. Maintain Closed-Building Conditions Keep all exterior doors and windows closed for 12 hours prior to the start of the test. You may use exterior doors for normal entry and exit as needed. During the testing period, continue to keep all windows, doors, and other openings to the outside closed. 2. Set and Maintain the Indoor Temperature Set your thermostat to 72°F (±5°F) and switch it to "Auto" mode. Do not alter the testing environment in any way. This includes: Opening windows or doors Changing thermostat or fan settings Operating systems that introduce or remove outside air 3. Avoid Activities That May Affect Test Results Avoid using mechanical systems that draw air out of the building, as they can impact the accuracy of the test. Do not move or tamper with any testing devices once placed. If anything occurs that might violate testing conditions—such as unexpected changes to ventilation, HVAC settings, or open windows—immediately report it to US Environmental Testing. If the test conditions are compromised, we may need to conduct a re-test. 4. Do Not Remove Tamper Evident Seals When we place the radon monitors and start the test, we will install tamper-evident seals on all windows. Do not remove these seals until the test concludes. 5. Receive Your Results The test will conclude 48 hours after the start time. At the time of monitor retrieval, we will provide verbal results. Within 24 hours, you will receive a formal report via email or fax. We can also send a hard copy by mail upon request. Following these guidelines ensures the most accurate radon measurement possible. Radon Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers in the U.S. It is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter a home through cracks and openings in floors and walls that are in contact with the ground. Testing your home is simple and inexpensive. Learn more about Radon. For Existin g Homes: Test for radon — testing is the only way to know if radon is in your home . Do-it-yourself test kits are convenient and accessible, or you may choose to have a professional test your home. If the test result indicates your radon level is too high (greater than 4.0 picocuries per liter air, pCi/L) a qualified radon service professional can install a radon mitigation system. For New Construction: Radon-resistant new construction (RRNC) draws radon from the soil and vents it through a pipe to the roof, preventing its entry into the house. This technique uses common materials and building skills. RRNC costs less than retrofitting a similar radon reduction system after the house is finished. New home buyers should ask their build to include RRNC features. All new homes, even new RRNC ones, should be tested for radon. Learn more about radon-resistant new construction. Learn about the Indoor airPLUS program and the Construction Specifications, which includes radon. Blog Ph:630-915-9434 Request Quote
