Radon Testing in Chicago and Northern Illinois

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that enters buildings through cracks and openings in foundations. Illinois has some of the highest radon potential areas in the country, with Northern Illinois frequently reporting elevated indoor radon levels. Because radon cannot be seen, smelled, or tasted, testing is the only reliable way to determine whether a property has elevated concentrations. Illinois health guidance recommends taking corrective action when radon levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L. Licensed professional radon measurements provide accurate results and help homeowners determine whether mitigation is necessary. Testing is particularly important during real estate transactions, basement finishing projects, and routine home safety evaluations.

 

What is Radon?

Radon is a radioactive noble gas formed from the decay of uranium in soil. It infiltrates structures through: Foundation cracks, Sump pits, Utility penetrations, Crawlspaces and slab joints​

Once inside, radon accumulates—especially in basements and lower levels.

1.  اس ٹیسٹ کے آغاز سے 12 گھنٹے پہلے بیرونی دروازوں اور کھڑکیوں کو رکھیں، عام داخلے اور باہر نکلنے کے لیے بیرونی دروازوں کے مسلسل استعمال کی اجازت ہے اور متوقع ہے۔   جانچ کی مدت کے دوران باہر کی تمام کھڑکیاں، دروازے اور دیگر سوراخ بند رکھیں۔

 

2.   تھرموسٹیٹ کو 72 ڈگری فارن ہائیٹ (جمع یا مائنس 5 ڈگری فارن ہائیٹ) پر سیٹ کریں اور "آٹو" پر سیٹ کریں۔ بشمول لیکن ان تک محدود نہیں، کھڑکیاں کھولنا، دروازے کھلے چھوڑنا، تھرموسٹیٹ یا پنکھے کی سیٹنگز کو تبدیل کرنا یا گھر میں باہر کی ہوا داخل کرنا۔

 

3.  مکینیکل سسٹمز کا آپریشن جو عمارت سے ہوا نکالتے ہیں ٹیسٹ کے نتائج کو بری طرح متاثر کر سکتے ہیں۔ تبدیل نہیں کیا جانا چاہئے.  رپورٹ کریںیاایس ماحولیاتی جانچکوئی بھی حالات یا واقعات جو اوپر بیان کی گئی شرائط کی کسی بھی طرح یا طریقے سے خلاف ورزی کا سبب بن سکتے ہیں، اور کوئی بھی ایسی صورت حال جس کا جانچ کی شرائط یا نتائج پر اثر ہو سکتا ہے۔  اگر ان ہدایات میں سے کوئی پیروی نہیں کی جاتی ہے اور ٹیسٹ کے نتائج غلط معلوم ہوتے ہیں، دوبارہ ٹیسٹ کی ضرورت پڑ سکتی ہے۔

 

4.  جب ریڈون مانیٹر لگائے جائیں گے اور ٹیسٹ شروع کیا جائے گا، تمام کھڑکیوں پر چھیڑ چھاڑ کی واضح مہریں لگائی جائیں گی۔ جب تک پیمائش مکمل نہ ہوجائے ان کو نہیں ہٹایا جانا چاہئے۔

 

5.  Radon پیمائش شروع ہونے کے اڑتالیس (48) گھنٹے بعد، پیمائش ختم ہوجائے گی اور مانیٹر کی بازیافت کے وقت آپ کو (زبانی) نتائج حاصل ہوں گے۔  A رسمی رپورٹ 24 گھنٹوں کے اندر تیار کی جائے گی اور الیکٹرانک طور پر (ای میل، فیکس) اور بذریعہ ڈاک (درخواست پر) فراہم کی جائے گی۔

Radon Levels Explained
 Radioactivity (and radon gas) results are measured in units of picocuries (pCi) [per liter of air] in the United States versus the International System of Units (SI), the Becquerel (Bq). A picocurie is a unit of radioactivity that is equivalent to one trillionth of a curie. In Perspective, one cure measures the rate of radioactive decay, specifically 3.7 x 10^10 disintegrations per second.

What is an Action Level?
The EPA recommends fixing homes when radon levels reach 4 pCi/L (150 Bq/m³) or higher. Since no known level of radon exposure is considered safe, the EPA also urges Americans to consider taking action when levels fall between 2 and 4 pCi/L (75–150 Bq/m³). (epa.gov)
